ABSTRACT
The study focused on the causes of lateness and their effects on students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The reason for carrying out this project is to find out the extent to which lateness affects students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools. Seven (7) research questions guided the study. The study adopted survey research design. The population of the study comprises of all thirteen (13) public senior secondary schools in Ikpboa-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The respondents were the one thousand two hundred and sixteen (1,216) public senior secondary school students in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Four (4) schools were selected from the thirteen (13) as sample suing simple random sampling technique while twenty-five (25) students were chosen from each sampled school making one hundred (100) students as respondents using the convenient sampling technique. A questionnaire titled “Causes and Effects of Lateness on Students Academic Performance Questionnaire (CELSAPQ)” was used. The reliability of the instrument was tested using the test-retest method and the result was calculated with the application of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and the reliability was found to be 0.83. simple percentage was used to analysis the data.
The findings revealed that family background, school distance from home, watching late night films, sleeping late at night and waking up late due to laziness. The findings revealed that inability of parents to provide school materials, lack of students’ interest in academic work, lack of school facilities and inability of school authorities to enforce discipline were causes of lateness and these had negative effects on students’ academic performance in the public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
From the findings, it was concluded that family background, school distance from students’ homes, watching late night films, sleeping late at night and waking up late due to laziness were the causes of lateness to school. Then effect of lateness to school was poor students’ academic performance in the public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The following recommendations were made: teachers should come to school early to encourage the students do the same and students should keep a strict adherence to school rules and regulation. Parent should play their part in getting their children prepared for school on time among others.
