ABSTRACT

Previous researches on language domain and use have been aimed at understanding the relationship between language, its use and the society. This research draws its insights from such previous studies hence its focus is to investigate the function of language in real life situations. This can be done by examining the interaction between the society and language. This study is focused on investigating domain of language use and the interaction between society and language by examining the language use by Benin City bus drivers and conductors.

Descriptive framework was adopted in this study. This framework is used in the description of a particular language phenomenon and how it applies to the language, hence its choice as the research framework.

The data collected for this research were done using the direct observation data collection technique, in this data collection method the bus drivers and conductors are unconscious of their roles as informants.

The findings of this research include that language use vary among groups in the society, this variation is determined by factors which include the preoccupations and subject matters of the language users and interactions respectively. Also discovered is that language use is an aspect of the nature of language which shows the communicative function of language.

This research concludes that language use by Benin City bus drivers and conductors is unique (registers), and it performs complete communicative function, hence it is an aspect of language use since it highlights the nature of language.
