ABSTRACT
This study focused on the language use in the Yoruba Traditional marriage ceremony. The objectives of the study were; to examine the language use in Yoruba marriage ceremonies specifically focusing on the role of language in greetings and introductions, and how these linguistics expression convey respect, honour, and goodwill among the families and guests involved, to analyze the linguistic aspect of Bride price payment in Yoruba marriage ceremony, exploring the negotiation of appreciation or satisfaction that are communicated through language during this transactions, to investigate the use of language in conveying advice within Yoruba marriage ceremony, examining the wisdom, guidance, and blessings conveyed to the bride and groom by elders and well-wishers during the ceremony, to explore the linguistic and cultural aspects of prayers in Yoruba marriage ceremony, examining the role of language in conveying spiritual aspirations, blessings and celebratory emotions during these ritualistic Expressions. The study employed the qualitative research methodology. The Expressions were thoroughly analyzed under two three headings namely Yoruba Expressions, Lexical meaning and free form. The data was analyzed using the Ethnography of communication by Dell Hymes (1964) The findings revealed in this study shows that the Yoruba people value respect and it’s more than just a celebration of love but an exhibition of cultural beliefs ,norms and value. It was also found out that there is a link between the cultural practices in Yoruba community and the language and the language and the way they employ language in different social settings.
