ABSTRACT
Language use in Olokun songs are basically traditional songs used to appease and appreciate deities especially Olokun and Okhuane. This work basically looked at the language used in the appreciation and worship of the deity called Olokun and Okhuane for the purpose of procreation, wealth and longevity. The tape recorder and camera were the basic instrument for the collection of the data of songs and pictorials as presented in the work. Silas Ibieghakukhun Oloku shrine house, was one particular place where some songs and pictures of a full initiate was carried out in a place called Evbuobu Quarters in Benin City in October 2016. Another source of data collection was from Priest Ebohon Olokun Shrine House at Sapele Road, Benin City in September 2016. The findings of this research work shows that metaphor, irony, personification, allegory, hyperbole etc play linguistic role in the language of songs used in Olokun worship.
