ABSTRACT
Language is a system of communication that allow humans to share thoughts, ideas and feelings. It is a way of thinking and it helps us to organise our thoughts and to make sense of the world around us. Language is a cultural phenomenon that is shared by history, values and beliefs of the people who speak it. It is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that is essential for human interaction and social organization. This thesis investigates the various aspects used in Ogun festival in Ondo town. This study was motivated by the need to document an aspect of the cultural heritage of Ondo people where language is used extensively. The data for this study was collected through primary source of data collection such as interviewing the devotees and non devotees of Ogun deity through voice recording ,videos and participant observation of the researcher who is also an indigene of Ondo state. Using the functionalism theoretical framework to language use in Ogun festival in Ondo town. This study finds out that language can function through different aspects which can be through songs, incantations, chants and symbols. These research also found out that there are three major Ogun shrine in Ondo town which are Ogun Oba which is headed by Male priest, Ogun Aboba also headed by Male priest and Ogun Aisero which is headed by female priestess. Based on these findings, I recommend that the old Ogun adherents should continue with the task of passing on the cultural values such as the language and rituals down to the younger generations so that there would be continuity, conformity with the traditional values as a way of preserving the traditional practices.
