ABSTRACT

The research titled “language shift’’. Orogun as a case study is devoted to evaluate the Urhobo language to reveal its endangered state bringing out the causes of the decline, its effect and proffer solution.

The framework of this investigation is based on the sociolinguistic approach through field work.

The objective of the work is to create awareness on the declining state of the Urhobo language and consequently spur language lovers to action. Besides this, we also sort to create ways to support the use of the language in all contexts.

On the basis of this study, we found out that the Urhobo language is an endangered species being oppressed by several factors and if not corrected may die of this use in the near future.

This work is subdivided into five major parts (chapters) for discussion, chapter one is basically the introduction to the background of the language, classification and subject of discussion, chapter two deals with the review of literature on language shift, language content, language attitude, and language maintenance. Chapter three deals with the theoretical framework. Chapter four deals with the analysis of data solicited from informants who are Urhobo speakers. Chapter five highlights the summary of findings, conclusions and recommendations.
