ABSTRACT
This essay investigates the use of language in Eke’s poetry to convey meaning and evoke emotional responses, inviting readers to engage with complex ideas and reflect on human experiences. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, specifically textual analysis guided by formalist theory, this study examines three key parameters: rhetorical language, figurative language and allusive language. Through this analysis, the essay elucidates how these linguistic elements contribute to the portrayal of themes within the poem. The essay concludes that Kola Eke in May 29 and Other Poems, COVID-19 and Other Poems and 1914 and Other Poems, utilizes rhetorical, figurative and allusive language to present themes in the poems.
