ABSTRACT

Much has been discuss about interpersonal relationship and language, but no serious effort has been made to analyse the conversation of different people to the understanding of the role of language in the exhibition of authority and power in interpersonal relation. This work therefore, is out to look out language of authority and power in interpersonal relation. Some conversations were collected using eavesdropping and participant observation methodology. The conversations were subjected to analysis using conversational analytical theory of Austin 1964. The following conclusion was reached; Age, economic status, social standing and political influence, including sex were major influences to language of authority and power in interpersonal relationship.
