ABSTRACT

This study examines language attrition and revitalization within domestic diaspora communities, focusing on the Isoko language. The research investigates the sociolinguistic factors influencing language decline, barriers to its continued use, and strategies for its revitalization. The study is supported by the Ethnolinguistic Vitality Framework, which assesses the interplay of demographic, status, and institutional factors in language maintenance. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving interviews with a diverse sample of informants from domestic diaspora communities. Data were analyzed to identify patterns of language use, levels of proficiency, and  attitudes toward the Isoko language. Key findings revealed that urbanization, generational gaps, and the dominance of English significantly contribute to language attrition. Proficiency levels vary across age groups, with older generations demonstrating fluency while younger generations exhibit limited knowledge. However, ongoing efforts - such as cultural events, advocacy for educational inclusion, and the use of digital media-show promise in revitalizing the language. The study concludes that collaborative community initiatives, policy support, and increased parental engagement are vital to preserving the Isoko language. By addressing the identified challenges and leveraging the opportunities for revitalization, the study underscores the importance of safeguarding linguistic diversity in Nigeria.
