ABSTRACT
The present study investigated the language attitudes of Gokana teenagers towards Gokana in Rivers State. Over the time, due to shift in paradigm many teenagers had embraced the frequent use of English other than speaking their native language. So, our focus of the study is to examine the attitudes of the teenagers towards learning and speaking the language in formal and informal situations. To highlight and explain the language choice between Gokana and English language during social interaction and discourse, to present some suggestive measures to be undertaken based on the results and implications of the language attitudes. The project work is a descriptive research therefore, the research design adopted for the study is the survey design. Our findings shows that the Gokana language is an endangered language. The endangerment condition of Gokana language results from the reckless tendencies of the Gokana teenagers to abandon the speaking of the language.This work therefore, advocate a language planning policy that will recognize the indigenous languages of Nigeria that will help the young ones have the zeal to learn the language and develop it’s linguistic features.
