ABSTRACT

 The purpose of this study was to identify and examine the various problems that have effect on the attitude of the teenagers towards the Edo language. In the realization of this objective, the descriptive research was chosen for the study and the simple random technique was employed to get the respondent and data for the study. A total of one hundred and fifthly respondent were used as the sample size. the instrument was validated and tested for reliability, responses from the questionnaires were used to answer the research questions that were raised in the study. from the findings, it was discovered that society, parents and school disregard for the Edo language have a negative effect on the teenagers towards the Edo language.

 so for further purpose of further development and preservation of the Edo language, this research is going to be concerned with the behaviour exhibited by teenagers in Edo State particularly those in Ikpoba hill Of Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state to their indigenous language. the teenagers in this geographical area was chosen because, one way to ascertain the vitality of a languages well as the attitude towards the language, is to observe, document and analyze how the language is handled by the younger generation.

  Based on the findings, the researcher saw that 99% of the teenagers attitude towards the Edo language is negative, so he recommended some remedies to revitalized the endangered language, such as, the government should award scholarship to the student studying the Edo language, and also by using the endangered language as a means of transmission of message, instruction to the teenagers at home or been taught in school.

In conclusion, based on the findings, the researcher recommended that an endangered language can be revitalized by being loyal to one's language, generally, in terms of desiring to retain an identity through the use of language and to adhere to the cultural practices associated with that language.
