ABSTRACT
The accumulation of solid waste has emerged as a significant environmental concern in Ikpoba Okha Local Government area, the Inadequate handling and disposal of municipal solid waste presents notable health hazards in this area. Hence this project aims to conduct a suitability analysis to determine the appropriate location for solid waste disposal landfill within the study area. By integrating geographical information system (GIS) technology with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), eight conditioning factors were identified within the study area which includes Geomorphology, Lithology, Land Use and Land Cover, Slope, Residential areas, Drainage, Soil, Road. Thereafter their individual maps are generated and classification is carried out based on their relative importance and calculations using Pair-wise comparison matrix. The final suitability map is created with the use of the weightage values in ArcGIS 10.4 version environment. The result for the weightage values are in descending order of magnitude with distance to drainages at 33%, distance to urban areas at 23%, distance to road at 16%, soil at 11%, slope at 7%, LULC at 5%, Geomorphology at 3%, geology at 2%. It was identified that only 4% of the study area would be a suitable zone for locating a landfill. Some of the suitable areas are located around Ogbe-Orogho, Edo Refinery and Petrochemical ltd axis, Ekosa, Okhuaine among others. with this information, the government, individuals, or any relevant entities can take proactive measures to address the problem of improper waste disposal in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
