ABSTRACT

This research was carried out in Iguzama community of Edo State to evaluate the suitability of some soils for cassava cultivation. Soil survey process was carried out at a detailed scale, which produced three mapping units and each mapping unit was represented by a pedon; each pedon was described and sampled appropriately. The soil samples were analysed using standard procedures. Land suitability evaluation was done by comparing the characteristics of the land with land requirements for cassava. The result of evaluation showed that pedon 1 (occupies 12 ha and covers a land area of 30 %) was highly suitable with minor limitations in climate, topography, soil physical characteristics and fertlity; Pedon 2 (occupies 10 ha and covers a land area of 25 %) was marginally suitable with severe limitation in topography; Pedon 3 (occupies 18 ha and covers a land area of 45 %) was moderately suitable with minor limitations in topography and fertility characteristics. Major limitations to cassava cultivation of the study were fertility (Base saturation, organic matter) and topography (slope).
