ABSTRACT
This study was carried out in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, to evaluate some soils for cabbage cultivation. Soil survey was carried out using the rigid grid systematic method at a detailed scale which produced four (4) mapping units; two mapping units in each site ( Sites A and B) . Each mapping unit was represented by a pedon and each pedon was appropriately described according to FAO. Soil samples were analyzed using standard procedures. The result showed that texture ranged from sandy to sandy clay loam, pH ranged from 5.02 to 6.03, CEC ranges from 36.00cmolkg-1 to 167.02cmolkg-1 across the pedons. Results of land suitability evalution showed that on both current and potential rating, pedon 1A which represents an area of 6.4 hacteres (49.6% of site A), was not suitable(N) for cabbage cultivation due to critical limitation in soil physical characteristics (soil texture). Pedons 2A representing 5.69 ha (44% site A), 1B which covers a land area of 1.65 ha (38% of site B) and 2B represents a land area of 2.64 ha (62% of site B) were marginally suitable(S3) for cabbage cultivation due to severe limitation in climate (rainfall amount) and topography(slope)- pedon 2B. Limitations encountered in this study (climate, topography and soil physical characteristics) are not amendable; therefore, the study area should not be used for cabbage cultivation.
