ABSTRACT

This study was carried out in Isua community in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area Of Edo State, to evaluate some soils for plantain cultivation.

Soil survey product was carried out by the rigid grid method at a detailed scale which produced four(4) mapping units. Each mapping units was represented by a pedon and each pedon was appropriately described according to FAO (1976). Soil samples were analysized using Standard procedures.

Results of suitability evaluation showed that Pedons 3 and 4 representing an area 56.67 hectares and amounting to 44.29% of the land area were moderately suitable (S2) for plantain cultivation with limitation in climate and fertility. Pedon 2 representing an area of 54.25 hectares and amounting to 42.35% is marginally suitable (S3) for plantain cultivation with limitation in soil fertility as a result of the pH of the soils while Pedon 1 representing an area of 17.13 hectares and amounting to 13.37% is not suitable for plantain cultivation with limitation on fertility as a result of the CEC of the soil. Thus, the cultivation of plantain in the study area could be profitable after amelioration. It is therefore recommended that land should be adequately maximised for plantain cultivation since the risk of failure is at minimum level.
