ABSTRACT
This study was carried out at Iguzama Local Government in Ovia North East Local Government area of Edo state to evaluate some soils for onion cultivation. Soil survey was carried out by the rigid grid method at a detailed scale which produced two (2) mapping unit in each site ( site A- 4 ha, site B- 12 ha). Each mapping unit was represented by a pedon, which described appropriately. The result of the land evaluation revealed that pedons 1a, 2a, 1b, 2b were not suitable, N(c, s, f) for cultivation of onion, due to severe limitations in climate (rainfall); soil physical characteristics (texture); and fertility (Nitrogen) based on current suitability rating. Potential suitability rating showed that the all the pedons were not suitable for Onion cultivation, N(c,s), due to limitations in climate and soil physical characteristics. Limitations encountered in climate and soil physical characteristics are not amendable; thus, the study area (Sites A and B) should not be used for cultivation of Onion.
