ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Exclusive breastfeeding is "an infant's consumption of human milk with no supplementation of any type (no water, no juice, no nonhuman milk and no foods) except for vitamins, minerals and medications for six months. Adequate nutrition is essential for child development and child mortality remains high in low and middle-income countries. During the first two months of life, infants who are not breastfed are nearly six times more likely to die from infectious diseases than infants who were breastfed. Consequently, the World Health Organization has recommended exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months after delivery.
