KNOWLEDGE, PERCEPTION AND UTILIZATION OF NURSING PROCESS IN PATIENT CARE AMONG NURSES IN A TERTIARY HEALTH FACILITY, BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

The nursing process is a scientific systematic method which the nurse utilizes to plan and provide individualized care to client this process is divided into five steps which emphasize on the essential activities that must be taken to address clientsnursing diagnosis and to managecollaborative problems or complications the process is divided into fivedistinct steps which include; assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The objective of this study is to ascertain the perception and utilization of the nursing process in patient care among nurses in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. The study was carried out using a descriptive cross sectional survey, a non-experimental design. A total of two hundred and fifty seven nurses were sampled from the population of nurses. A multi-staging sampling technique was used to stratify the wards into units and wards were selected randomly by balloting. Data was gotten from a well-structured questionnaire and a proforma was used to assess the level of practice of the nursing process in selected wards. The result from the study shows that majority of the nurses have fair knowledge of the nursing process, and the study also shows that the nurses have negative perception to the process, the nursing process was majorly carried out in the ophthalmic ward A&E trauma and ward M1. And also lack of motivation from superiors as well as insufficient time among other factors influenced the utilization of the nursing process. In conclusion majority of the nurses had fair knowledge of the nursing process, but had negative attitude and low practice of the use of nursing process also lack of time and low man-power was a major factor that influenced the use of nursing process in university of benin teaching hospital.
