ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to examine in detail the knowledge of tuberculosis among final year students of the University of Benin. The study also seeks to identify the most common factors that contribute to the spread of tuberculosis. Finally, this study intends to find out the knowledge and effects of tuberculosis among final year student of the University of Benin.
A cross – sectional survey research design will be used for the study. the targeted population is the final year students of the University of Benin which are two thousand, eight hundred and forty-six (2,846) in numbers, a simple rand sampling technique was used to select 150 students from five faculties in the University. A self-structured questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents, the data obtained was analyzed using the frequency counts and percentage
The study concluded that study participants had good knowledge and attitude towards TB. But this knowledge is not effectively seen in explaining the cause of TB and effective preventive mechanisms of TB. University health centre administrates and the Health Education lecturer in the institution should strengthen the routine health education activities on TB for the students. Following the findings of the study, the researcher made the following recommendations, Health administrators should intensive measures to increase the awareness level of TB among students independently or through partnering with health related clubs such as the Red Cross Society of Nigeria or with the Student Union Government. All contacts of TB patients or suspected TB patients recommended to be screened for active TB. If active TB is ruled out, they should be initiated on TB preventive treatment. Students should watch out closely on any suspected TB case and report such case to the school health center.
