This study was carried out to investigate the knowledge of the perceived benefits of antenatal care among market women in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo state. Three (3) research questions were raised to guide the study and the literatures related to the study were also reviewed.
The descriptive research design was adopted for this study and random sampling technique was used to select 171 (one hundred and seventy one) respondents from the total population of 3,427 (Three thousand, four hundred and twenty seven) market women in Egor Local Government Area. The questionnaire was validated by the project supervisor and two other lecturers from the department of Health, Safety, and Environmental Education (HSE). The split-half reliability method using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formulae was used to obtain the reliability coefficient. Data obtained from the instrument were analyzed using frequency count and percentages.
Findings from the study revealed that majority of the respondents; have a high knowledge of the perceived benefits of antenatal care, are not affected by the factors influencing utilization of antenatal care services, and have a high utilization rate of antenatal care services. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that there should be enhanced community outreach programs by initiating regular health education sessions in markets to increase the awareness about antenatal care benefits. Market women should be trained as peer educators who can educate their peers about antenatal care services and its benefits. Antenatal care education should also be integrated into existing maternal and child health programs to ensure a holistic approach.
