KNOWLEDGE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION AMONG ADULTS IN EKOSODIN COMMUNITY

ABSTRACT

This study was carried to examine the knowledge on the importance of environmental sanitation among adults in Ekosodin Community in Ovia North East LGA of Edo state.. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, Three research questions were raised to guide the study.

The study made use of descriptive survey research design which involves collecting information from a target population. The population of the study comprises the adults residing in Ekosodin Community in Ovia North East LGA of Edo state. A sample size of 192 respondents were used and the simple random technique was use to select. The sample used for research instrument was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two others in the department of Health Safety and Environmental Education. The Split-half test method of reliability was used and a coefficient of 0.84 was obtained which was good. Data was analyzed using simple statistical analysis such as frequency counts and percentage.Based on the findings of the study it was concluded that the Adults in Ekosodin Community are not motivated to participate in community cleanup activities or sanitation campaigns,and this is necessary to eliminate poor sanitation practices among them and to improve their health. Also it was observed that the adults in Ekosodin community are not satisfied with the situation of their environment and sanitation condition In summary, For effective improvement of the knowledge and importance of environmental sanitation to take place in the community the government should work towards creating awareness and educating the members of the community on good environmental sanitation practices and their health, the risks associated with poor sanitation and work towards making it better by renovating worn out environmental facilities, provision of designated waste bins and the provision of good sanitary facilities. As a result of the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made:

Government should Implement continuous educational initiatives focused on the importance of environmental sanitation, targeting all age groups with tailored content. Adults in the community can take the initiative to organize regular community cleanup events. This will not only help keep the environment clean but also foster a sense of community and collective responsibility.The residents in the community should practice and also encourage other households to separate their wastes into recyclables ,compostables and non-recyclables.
