Abstract

This study assessed the knowledge of the Health Implications on the Abuse of Emergency Contraceptives among Female Education Students in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. A purposive sampling technique was used in selection of one hundred and fifty (150) undergraduate students which were drawn from the eight (8) Department in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin for the purpose of the study. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Test re test method of reliability was adopted in this study to determine the reliability of the instrument. Twenty (20) questionnaires were administered to a group of respondents who are not part of the study. Cronbach's alpha was calculated with SPSS for attenuation. Cronbach's alpha value of .821 was observed. Thus, the instrument is reliable. Based on the data collected and analyzed, the findings of the study revealed that undergraduates in the faculty of Education have high knowledge of emergency contraceptives, have high knowledge that abuse of emergency contraceptives can lead to increased risk of ovarian cyst. Also, respondents have high knowledge that abuse of emergency Contraceptives can lead to Hormonal Imbalance and lastly, undergraduates in the faculty of education have high knowledge that abuse of emergency contraceptives can have emotional and psychology impacts on their overall Health. Based on these findings, it was recommended to identify specific areas where knowledge may still be lacking despite overall high awareness by conducting detailed surveys to explore nuances in knowledge, such as understanding of correct usage, side effects and alternative contraceptive methods as well as to assess whether high knowledge levels correlate with responsible use and whether there are misconceptions or behavioral patterns that needs addressing.
