ABSTRACT
The study investigated the knowledge of the Health and Environmental impact of Improper waste disposal among residents of Ekosodin community, Ovia North East, Benin City, Edo State. To achieve the purpose of this study, three (3) research questions were raised and the literatures related to the study were also reviewed. The study adopted the descriptive study research design. The population of the study consisted Seven thousand (7000) resident of Ekosodin community,. two hundred and ten (210) respondents, purposively and randomly selected, formed the sample of the population. The instrument used for the study was a “Questionnaire on Knowledge of the Health and Environmental impact of improper waste disposal among residents of Ekosodin. the questionnaire was validated by the project supervisor and two other lecturers from the department of Health, Safety, and Environmental Education (HSE). The test-retest reliability method using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient formulae was used to obtain the reliability coefficient. Data obtained from the instrument were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages. Findings revealed that majority of the respondents; have high knowledge of Health impact of waste disposal, there is proper community engagement in cleaning the environment. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that programs such as campaigns, workshops, seminars, etc. should be organized to increase community participation in cleaning the environment so as to increase awareness on and the knowledge of Health and Environmental impact of improper waste disposal. Government agency should enforce agencies and policies in place to ensure community engagement in proper disposal of waste. Environmental agency should bring programs to educate community on the effect of improper waste disposal to improve for better participation and also to increase awareness.
