ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of the effects of generator fumes on human health among shop owners in Uselu market, Benin City, Edo State. To guide the researcher in the study, three research questions were raised and three hypothesis were formulated.
A descriptive survey research design was employed to carry out the study. The population of the study comprised all the shops in Uselu market, Benin City, Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was employed to select a sample size of 150 shops in Uselu market which make up the sample of the study. The research instrument used for the data collection was a structured questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. Test-retest reliability technique was used to test the reliability of the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentages and the findings revealed that most of the respondents have little knowledge of the effects of generator fumes on their health.
The recommendations based on the findings from the study have it that the government and institutions should constantly organized workshops/seminars for shop owners in Uselu market, so as to enlighten the people more about the effects of generator fumes on human health. Health education programme should be provided to educated shop owners in Uselu market on the harmful effects of Carbon monoxide and preventive measures against it. Shop owners in Uselu market on their own, should be eager to adopt some preventive measures at their workplace, to prevent Carbon monoxide harmful effects on their health. Government should work at improving and stabilizing power supply, in order to reduce the health risks/effects of generator fumes among shop owners in Uselu market.
