Abstract

The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is on the increase among pregnant women and the effects on fetus and the mother cannot be overemphasized. The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge of gestational diabetes amongst pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in a tertiary facility in Edo State. A descriptive cross- sectional study design was adopted and a convenience sample techniques was used. This study was conducted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City. According to statistics gathered from city antenatal clinic (ANC) register, there were 195 women ho net the selection criteria within the study period. Therefore, the required sample size for the study was 131. Data for this study were collected using structured questionnaire. The data obtained from the questionnaire was analyzed in table using simple presentation and frequency method. Findings from this study showed that they had good knowledge of about 98 (74.8%) of gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. This study showed that they had good knowledge 109 (83-2%) about screening, treatment and complications of GDM. They had a good knowledge of 88 (67.2%) about knowledge of complications of GDM.
