KNOWLEDGE OF CONTRACEPTIVES USE AMONG UNDERGRADUATES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

The study "Knowledge of Contraceptive use among undergraduates of the University of Benin " was designed to ascertain the level of knowledge and use of Contraceptives among students of University of Benin. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The study population involved all undergraduates of the University of Benin which was a total of 75,000 students. The main instrument for the study was a self-structured questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was established by giving it to the supervisor of the research work and an expert in the field of this research study. The reliability of the instrument was established by employing descriptive and inferential statistics in processing and analyzing the generated data. The questionnaire was distributed directly to the respondents by the researcher. After the collection and collation of the instrument, the data obtained were subjected to analysis using frequency counts and percentages. Results from the study showed among other things that, there is a good level of knowledge of Contraceptives among undergraduates of the University of Benin; but the extent of utilization of Contraceptives among undergraduates of the University of Benin is relatively low. It was recommended that, To reduce inconsistent use of contraceptives, healthcare professionals should provide adequate, accurate, and complete information about their potential negative effects, Programmes to increase undergraduates knowledge of all Contraceptive methods and their effective use are required, youth-friendly centres should be established in all tertiary institutions to enable students to access unrestricted reproductive health information and care, University of Benin should have access to trained counselors who are qualified to provide sex education, and their services should be well-known and there should be provision and distribution of Contraceptives to undergraduates to aid usage.
