KNOWLEDGE OF CATARACT AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN SELECTED PUBLIC SCHOOL IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The sense of vision is crucial to every single person in this world. A cataract is defined as the opacification of the crystalline lens, which may be resulted from congenital, developmental and acquired causes. This study is aimed at accessing the knowledge of cataract among secondary school teachers in selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government area of Benin City, Edo State. A descriptive non-experimental research design was used for the study, with a total of 153 participants. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data, and the reliability was established through Cronchba's alpha reliability method. Only 34 (24.3%) claimed to have heard of cataract while the remaining majority representing 119 (77.8%) of the respondents claimed to have not heard about it. 16 (11.4%) of the respondents said to a very high extent that cataract is an opacity of the crystalline lens. 22 (15.7%) said to a great extent, 26 (18.6%) were undecided, 42 (30%) said to a low extent while the remaining 34 (24.3%) said to a very low extent. In conclusion, there is inadequate knowledge about cataract and efforts should be done to increase the knowledge and awareness of the disease.
