Abstract
The study was embarked on to investigate the knowledge of and the attitudes toward solid waste disposal among secondary school students in Ika south local government area of Delta State. It also aimed at evaluating the impact of students’ knowledge on their attitudes toward solid waste disposal. Based on this, five research questions were raised and three were hypothesized and tested at alpha level of 0.05.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was twenty thousand, three hundred and eighty (20,380) in Ika South Local Government, Delta State. The sample size of this study was 230 respondents. This was drawn by cluster sampling technique and simple random sampling technique of balloting by replacement. A self-structured questionnaire was used for the study. The instrument was validated by three experts and test-retest reliability was done on the instrument. A Pearson Correlation Coefficient value of 0.85 was discovered. Thus the instrument was reliable. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and stated hypotheses were tested using linear regression and independent t-test at 0.05 significant level.
The following findings were discovered in the study amongst others majority of the students had moderate knowledge toward solid waste disposal; majority of the respondents agreed that solid waste disposal is seen as something very important, improper disposal of solid waste constitute nuisance in the school premises and others. It was seen that the moderate knowledge had negative weak significant relationship on the student attitude towards solid waste disposal.Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommends that Environmental education with emphasis on issues regarding solid waste management and recycling, should be included in the basic curriculum or certain course works of secondary school students.
