ABSTRACT

Waste is of enormous concern all over the world due to the fact that man’s quest for better living has resulted in the development of technologies for processing raw materials, and these technologies generates by-products which become waste products. Also the increase in population has led to more a higher demand of resources which in turn produces more waste. Various studies have revealed that the knowledge and attitude towards recycling would determine their behavioural intention. This study uses the theory of planned behavior as its theoretical framework. Undergraduates from the University of Benin are the data source of this study as we to ascertain the extent of their knowledge, examine their attitudes and the possible factors that could affect undergraduates recycling.

A descriptive study conducted on 160 undergraduate students from three randomly selected departments was carried out. Simple random sampling technique was used to determine the sample size from the faculty. Self-administered questionnaires were also used. Data analyses were conducted using percentage and frequency counts. The study eventually reveals that undergraduate students possess poor knowledge and unfavourable attitude towards recycling and it also shows that knowledge and skill acquisition are factors that affect undergraduate students recycling. The knowledge possessed by the undergraduate students is not encouraging and they have a negative attitude towards recycling.
