ABSTRACT

This study examined knowledge and attitude towards deforestation among inhabitants of Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state. To make this possible four research question and purpose of the study were raised to ascertain the knowledge and the attitude of inhabitants of Ovia North East local government Edo state towards deforestation, to sensitize inhabitants of Ovia North East Local Government Edo state about the knowledge and attitude towards deforestation and its effects on the ecosystem.

Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The population of the study consists of all 153,849 respondents in Edo state and the sample size of 138 accessible respondents for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire developed by the researcher and was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Department of health safety and environmental education. The reliability coefficient was 0.79 was obtained using Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient (PPMCC). The data collected were analyzed statistically using the statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) software.

The study discovered that respondent knowledge of deforestation is high as variables like and that the respondent attitude towards deforestation is high. The study recommends that to further promote the knowledge and attitude of inhabitants of Ovia North East Local government of Edo state towards deforestation and thereby mitigate environmental degradation. It is important to narrow the knowledge gap between the environmentally concerned bodies and the community at the grassroots level. Therefore, there could be good ground to have smooth relationship in between them. For such important activities, an extensive environmental education through local institutions such as religious, schools, public gatherings should be provided to the community at large and that improving the social dimension of inhabitants of Ovia North East Local government of Edo state will support them slowly raise their self-esteem and bring about attitudinal change among those who consider deforestation inferior, this will eventually improve their social integration.
