ABSTRACT

This study investigated the knowledge, attitude and perception of sexuality education among secondary school students in Ethiope East Local Government area, Delta State. Thus, the study investigated knowledge of male and female students towards sexuality education. Sequel to this, four research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The theoretical framework of the study was hinged on the information behavioural skill model. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised eighteen thousand, five hundred and twenty-five (18,525) secondary school students from 24 public schools and 37 private schools in Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State. The sample size of this study consisted of 495 students in Ethiope LGA of Delta State. A multi stage sampling techniques was employed. A self-structured questionnaire was used for the study. The research instrument used for this study was a self-structured questionnaire. The instrument was content and face validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin city. To establish the reliability of the instrument on knowledge, split-half reliability method was used and Kuda-Richardson 20 was used to analyze the collected data, while the internal consistency of the items on attitude and perception was measured using Cronbach alpha statistics. The instrument was administered to 20 respondents who do not form part of the sample. Items measuring knowledge reported alpha value of 0.77 and 0.88 for attitude and perception respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and stated hypothesis was tested using two sample independent t-test at 0.05 significant level.
