ABSTRACT

Teachers have a very significant, lifelong impact on their students. This impact involves not only the teaching of particular academic skills, but also importantly, enforcing safe healthy habits on the students. With children spending more time in school, Primary School Teachers play a role in the level of health education the children have. Delays in or failures to treat eye diseases in children can lead to conditions, such as amblyopia, that are untreatable in adults. Severe vision loss in children can affect their development, mobility, quality of education, and employment opportunities. Therefore, the teachers need to be equipped with information on strategies for health promotion, education and communication to prevent childhood ocular morbidity. This study was aimed at assessing the knowledge, attitude and practices of Primary School Teachers towards eye health in Benin City. A total of four hundred and fifty (450) Primary School Teachers, from four different Local Government Areas, participated in this study. Data was collected using a pre-tested questionnaire to get detailed information on demographics, the level of knowledge about childhood eye diseases, the attitude and practices to their pupil’s eye health. The subjects’ responses were used to calculate their level of knowledge and attitude to eye health based on a score ratio.
