ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice towards the management of biomedical waste; a case study of health workers from university of benin teaching hospital. The study made use of the descriptive survey research design. The instrument for the study was the structured questionnaire which was validated by the project supervisor and another lecturer from the department of environmental health. The population of the study of UBTH, who were sampled from departments and units. Two hundred questionnaires were distributed to the various units and departments selected including pharmacy, medical laboratory, accident and emergency, nursing departments, environmental health, hematology/blood bank, of which all the questionnaires were retrieved and data analysis was based on this. Data was analyzed using knowledge, attitude and practice in the generation, collection and disposal of biomedical waste. Based on the analysis of the collected data, It also shows that there is an appreciable effort by the hospital management in the provision of containers and receptacles for the collection of biomedical waste, as well as provision of personal protective equipment for staffs. The study however recommends that more efforts should been made by the hospital management in sensitizing the staffs of the hospital on the concept of biomedical waste generation, proper segregation by use of the right type of receptacles, use of PPE’S, well as enforcing the regulations, for safety of staff and patients alike.
