ABSTRACT
Background and objectives: The practice of smoking tobacco with a waterpipe, or shisha, is growing in popularity. More young people than ever are smoking shisha worldwide. An increasing amount of research indicates that college students might not have the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about waterpipe smoking. The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adults smokers in faculty of social sciences, university of Benin, Benin city, as well as to find out how common smoking is among them. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at three department in faculty of social sciences, university of Benin, Benin city. Descriptive and statistical approaches (SPSS-23) were used to examine the associations at P 0.05 in order to account for multiple comparisons. Results: From Study participants included 324 students (189male and 135 female). 90% of respondents responded. The frequency of smoking cigarettes was 47.22% (25.62% of the male students and 21.60% of the female students) while the prevalence of smoking waterpipes was 54.63% (25.62% of the male students and 24.07% of the female students). 157 (48.46%) of the students who smoke cigarettes are WP smokers. The majority of the students in this study were not fully informed of the most detrimental impacts of smoking. Conclusion and recommendation: Male smokers were more numerous than female smokers. There was a very strong correlation between smoking cigarettes and water pipes. inclusion of a thorough, distinct course on tobacco control and the negative impacts of smoking on health in university curricula. In public and private universities, this course must include three lectures in addition to English language or English debate in the first year. All university students should receive comprehensive health education and counseling regarding the negative effects of smoking.
