ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hepatitis B infection is a serious infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) which attacks the liver and results in complications that can result in death. It is the most common serious liver infection in the world and the virus is considered a major public health problem globally.
Objectives: The study assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of Hepatitis B vaccination among University of Benin Students in Benin City with the aim of making recommendations to the appropriate authorities so as to reduce the prevalence of HBV and its complication.
Methodology: This study was carried out among 400 University of Benin Students and respondents were selected using systematic sampling technique. A self-administered questionnaire was the tool used for data collection. Data was entered and analyzed with IBM SPSS version 25.0 software. The association between socio-demographic variable and knowledge, attitude and practice of Hepatitis B vaccination was analyzed using Chi square test. The level of significance was set at p<0.05.
Results: A total of 400 respondents participated in the study. Findings showed that awareness of Hepatitis B vaccination was good (68.8%) while knowledge was poor (44.8%). Attitude towards Hepatitis B vaccination was positive (94.4%). Among the study participants, only 88 (22.0%) had received at least one dose of Hepatitis B vaccination while 312 (78.0%) had not been vaccinated. For the majority of the non-vaccinated participants, the main reason for not receiving vaccination was the lack of knowledge on how to receive vaccine.
