ABSTRACT

This study investigates knowledge, attitude and practice of hand hygiene protocol among undergraduate nursing students on clinical placement in University of Benin Teaching Hospital. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The population comprised of three hundred and thirteen (313) undergraduate nursing students in their 2nd to 5th year of study. The sample size was determined using the Taro Yamme formula, which yielded one hundred and sixty (162). A simple random sampling technique was used in selecting representative sample for each level. A well-structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Prior to administration, the instrument was tested for reliability using test retest method and a Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. Data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The hypotheses were tested at p < 0,05 level of significance. Results obtained showed that students had moderate knowledge about hand hygiene (mean of 3.27), positive attitude towards hand hygiene (mean 1.59), good practice of hand hygiene (mean 3.63). It was also revealed that there is no significant relationship between attitude towards hand hygiene and students’ level of study (, whereas it was found out that there was a significant relationship between level of knowledge of hand hygiene and practice (. It was recommended that nursing healthcare administrators should ensure that modern electronic surveillance are adopted and staff nurses should ensure they act as role models by ensuring reminder at workplace to nursing students.
