ABSTRACT
Traditional eye care practices are prevalent in various regions, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America, serving as indigenous remedies for ocular diseases. Despite its widespread use, traditional medicine, particularly in Nigeria, remains relatively an unexplored area in primary eye care delivery. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitude and perception of the people of Igbanke on herbal treatment of eye diseases in Igbanke, Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Edo State. Using a descriptive cross-sectional study design, data were collected from 422 respondents, predominantly aged between 41-50 years (n = 105, 24.9%), with a mean age of 40.33 ± 17.70 years, and a majority being male (n = 212, 50.24%). Results indicated that while a significant proportion of respondents were aware of herbal medicine (n = 293, 69.4%), fewer had heard of its specific use in treating eye diseases (n = 245, 58.1%). Uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of herbal medicine in treating eye diseases was prevalent (n = 124, 29.4%). Cost considerations often led participants to opt for herbal medicines over seeking medical attention from healthcare providers (n = 151, 35.8%). Despite reservations, a majority expressed openness to using herbal medicine if proven safe (n = 231, 54.7%), although many believed it should not complement modern eye treatments (n = 223, 52.8%). All socio-demographics(Age, martial status and occupation)had a significant relationships with the perception and beliefs of the Igbanke people (p<0.05). Nevertheless, a significant number perceived herbal medicines as effective in treating eye diseases, often citing personal experiences (n = 207, 49.0%). In conclusion, this study showed that there is limited awareness regarding the potential application of herbal medicine in treating eye diseases among the study population. To address this gap, targeted educational initiatives are recommended to enhance awareness and understanding of herbal treatment options for eye diseases.
