Abstract

The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) and software applications in healthcare has improved patient safety and adverse event reporting. However, little is known about nurses’ knowledge, perceptions, and utilization of these technologies in Nigerian healthcare settings. This study assessed nurses’ knowledge and use of software applications for patient safety and adverse event detection in a tertiary health institution. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 134 nurses using a stratified sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 26.0. Descriptive and inferential statistics examined socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge levels, perceptions, utilization rates, and barriers to IoT use. Results showed that 79% of nurses had good knowledge of IoT, recognizing its role in patient safety. A positive perception was observed, with 90.8% viewing IoT as beneficial. Utilization rates were high, particularly for monitoring patient vitals and adverse event reporting. However, only 48.5% could identify non-beneficial technologies, indicating a knowledge gap. Barriers to IoT use included limited access to devices and software (mean score: 3.4), insufficient training (3.6), and data privacy concerns (3.1). Technical challenges, such as system reliability and complex interfaces, were also significant obstacles. Despite strong knowledge and positive perceptions, practical challenges hinder full IoT utilization. Addressing these barriers through regular training, improved technical support, and robust data protection policies is essential for optimizing IoT use in healthcare.
