ABSTRACT

This study investigated the knowledge and Utilization of the 6-Step Model of nursing process in nursing practice, among nurses in a tertiary health Institution in Benin-City Edo state. The objective was to assess the level of knowledge and utilization of the 6-Step model of nursing Process among nurses in a tertiary health institution in Benin-City. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used for the study. The population was made up of all Nurses working in University of Benin Teaching Hospital. A total of 248 nurses were selected using a Stratified proportional random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a pretested semi structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Science software, Simple percentages, tables and chi-square was used to present the analyzed data. The result from the study shows that 51.2% of nurses acknowledge the presence of this new addition to the nursing process, while 48.8% do not. Notably, the distribution of steps in the new model reveals that 50.8% of nurses are embracing the complete six-step model, 63.3%, a significant majority of nurses believe it aids in record-keeping (77.4%) and contributes to the continuity of care (79.8%). Moreover, 71.4% of nurses find it provides job satisfaction, which is crucial for staff motivation. When asked if there is a significant benefit in using the new model, 72.2% of nurses responded affirmatively, indicating that the majority see value in its implementation ,It is therefore recommend  Hospitals should Offer ongoing and tailored training programs to enhance nurses' knowledge and proficiency in using the new nursing process model, emphasize the importance of patient-centered care, encouraging nurses to tailor their practice to individual patient needs, ensure that nursing leadership provides the necessary support and resources to facilitate the adoption of the new model and the professional development of the nursing staff.
