ABSTRACT

Unintended pregnancy is a global public health problem and can affect any sexually active woman.Unwanted pregnancies have a negative effect on women's personal lives, their families and society,leading to about 25million unsafe abortions and 47,000 maternal deaths every year.Contraception also referred to as birth control or family planning are artificial ways of preventing pregnancy. This can be a device, a medication, a procedure or a behavior.The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge and use of modern contraceptive methods among women attending a family planning clinic in a tertiary health facility Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria. The study was carried out using a descriptive cross sectional study a nonexperimental design. A total of two hundred and fifty five women attending family planning clinic were sampled from the population of women attending the family planning clinic . A convenient sampling technique was used and the participants were selected randomly. Data was gotten from a self-structured questionnaire administered by the researcher. The result from the study showed that majority 48% of the respondents exhibited poor knowledge of modern contraceptives. Findings on levels of use of modern contraceptives revealed that 46% of the respondents have high utilization of modern contraceptives. Also Study findings in respect to factors influencing the use of modern contraceptives revealed that 23.5% faced Barriers to access,43.1% had concerns about side effects,29.4% were influenced by cultural,moral,orreligious beliefs, 33.3% was determined by personal lifestyle preferences and 15.7% reported difficulties in consistently using modern contraception.. The hypotheses tested showed that there is a significant relationship between the educational level and utilization of modern contraceptives among women attending family planning clinic. Hence intervention can be made to improve on the level of literacy and encourage education among young girls.
