ABSTRACT

Contact lenses are used for varied purpose among undergraduates and different factors influence its usage. Knowledge on contact lens and its use become important as this may have important outcome. This study assessed knowledge and use of contact lens among undergraduates in University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. Three research questions and two hypotheses were raised for the study. The population of the study comprised of 6779 undergraduate, from which a sample of 378 was drawn using Taro Yamme formula. A cross sectional research design was adopted. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and Chi square statistics. Research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. A reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha statistics. Results revealed average knowledge on contact lens use (11.26 out of 15), the dominant source of information was the internet, while the least source was seminar/symposium. In addition, it was found out that a low percentage were current users (7.90%), while 25.4% were previous users, while 63.8% had never used it. More so, it was found out that the major purpose of contact lens use was for cosmetics/fashion. Furthermore there was no significant relationship between knowledge and gender, whereas a significant relationship existed between contact lens use and age. The study concluded that there is low usage of contacts and average knowledge on contact lens among undergraduates.  The study therefore recommended that public health nursing practitioners should consider campus-wide enlightenment and sensitization of undergraduates on the need to seek professional advice on contact lens use and undergraduates using and those having the intention to use contact lenses should endevour to observe optimal contact lens use in order to avoid adverse effects.
