KNOWLEDGE AND ULTILIZATION OF NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL STRATEGIES ON PAIN MANAGEMENT AMONG NURSES IN ORTHOPEDICS WARDS IN SELECTED HOSPITALS IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to Assess the Knowledge and utilisation of non-pharmacological strategies on pain management among nurses in orthopaedic wards in selected hospitals in Benin city. The objective of this research work aims at assessing the level of knowledge of nurses in orthopaedic wards towards the use of Non-pharmacological pain management strategies , assess the level of ultilisation and identify the barriers Influencing the use of Non-pharmacological pain management strategies. The study employed a cross sectional descriptive research design , University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Edo specialist Hospital were used as research settings The target population for this study consisted of 200 nurses with a minimum sample size of 146 nurses(calculated using the Taro Yammane formula). This was arrived at using convenience non- probability sampling technique. An organized survey was employed to gather information pertinent to the study's goals. The data were analyzed using mean , frequency and percentage and the hypotheses was tested using multivariate logistic regression,findings from results showed that  35(24%) had poor knowledge, 19(13%) had good knowledge while 92(63.0%) had moderate knowledge, findings on level of ultilisation shows that 12(8.2%) nurses rarely utilize non-pharmacological methods of pain management, 112(76.7%) nurses sometimes  utilize non-pharmacological methods of pain management while 22(15.1%) nurses always utilize non-pharmacological methods of pain management, on barriers that affect it implemetation findings shows that lack of training on the various Non-pharmacological pain management techniques with a mean of (4.40) was the main factor affecting its usage. In conclusion, based on the findings the level of knowledge and ultilisation on non pharmacological pain management strategies were moderate, hence nursing practise should take an initiative in ensuring that all practising nurses offers the highest possible pain management through the use of non-pharmacological strategies.
