ABSTRACT
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of blood clot in the veins especially in the veins of the leg. The success of deep vein thrombosis prevention depends on the knowledge of the nurse and a high level of practice is required for the prevention to be effective. This study was carried out to assess the knowledge and practices regarding the prevention of deep vein thrombosis among nurses in selected health institution in Edo state. Using a descriptive non experimental design, 201 nurses working in the medical, surgical, orthopedic and maternity wards were offered a wellstructured questionnaire using convenient sampling method. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics such as mean and inferential statistics such as Chi square, multivariate logistic regression and anova to test hypothesis at 5% level of significance. Result showed that majority 134(66.7%) had a poor level of knowledge, 55(27.4%) had a fair level of knowledge while minority 12(6.0%) had a good level of knowledge; It shows that 10(5.0%) have good practice, 21(10.4%) had moderate practice while 170(85.6%) have poor practice; The two majors factors was Lack of training on the various practices of DVT Prevention and Prior knowledge on prevention of DVT with a mean of 4.46 and 4.42 respectively. The least of the factor was Patient unwillingness to participate with a mean of 3.56. However, Patient preference was not a factor with a mean of 2.06.Conclusion: Based on the study findings the knowledge and practices regarding the prevention of deep vein thrombosis was less than the optimal level hence measures should be put in place so the can gain knowledge and improved practices towards deep vein prevention.
