ABSTRACT

The study was to investigate the level of knowledge and practices of exclusive breastfeeding among undergraduate breastfeeding mothers in University of Benin. Three research questions were raised to guide the researcher.

Descriptive survey design was adopted in this study. A sample size of 200 respondents were selected using the simple random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a well-designed structured questionnaire which was validated by the project Supervisor and two other lecturers from the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental education. Collated data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency and percentage tables.

From the data collected in the study, it was gathered that undergraduate breastfeeding mothers in University of Benin have adequate knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding but only 46% of the respondents practice exclusive breastfeeding. And the challenges of exclusive breastfeeding among undergraduate breastfeeding mothers in University of Benin include: Cracked sore caused by exclusive breastfeeding, Class schedule and no maternity leave for undergraduate students makes it difficult for successful exclusive breastfeeding.
