ABSTRACT
Hand hygiene is a pivotal integrant of practices aimed at infection prevention and control. Nurses by far, have the most contact time with patients such that their hand hygiene practice is a great determinant of the health outcomes of individuals in any health care setting. This study aimed at assessing the knowledge and practice of the World Health Organization (WHO) 5 moments of hand hygiene and identifying how certain factors affected this practice, among nurses in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), a tertiary health institution in Benin City Nigeria. A descriptive design was employed, and a multistage sampling method was used; first by using the hospital wards as clusters into which the total population was divided, then by stratified random sampling using professional ranking as strata. A total of 156 nurses were thus drawn from a target population of 256 in selected wards of the hospital.
