ABSTRACT
This study examined the knowledge and perception of University of Benin students about sexual abuse. Three (3) research questions were raised. The sample for the study consists of one hundred and thirty two (132) respondents selected from the area under investigation. The participants were selected using the simple random sampling technique while the data was collected with the aid of the questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained using the split-half reliability procedures. Simple percentages and frequency counts were used to analyze collected data.
Findings from the study revealed that victims of sexual abuse are not the cause of their ordeal and that serious punishment should be meted on perpetrators of sexual abuse. It was concluded that learning fighting skills avoiding late nights or frequent hanging around with members of the opposite sex does not protect one or stop sexual abuse in the society but teaching all and sundry, both young and old about the benefits of respecting people’s bodies and consent seeking will help reduce the menace of sexual abuse. Furthermore, it can be inferred that victims of sexual abuse need to be properly taken care of and the perpetrators should be exposed no matter who they are and made to go for compulsory therapy and rehabilitation in order to prevent a reoccurrence of the act.
The study recommended that parents, teachers and guardians should be taught about how to protect their loved ones from sexual abuse and they in turn would teach the children about their sexual rights and how to speak out if any of these rights are trampled upon. Also, it was recommended that the government especially ministry of health and information sectors should collaborate in organizing frequent online and onsite education for young ones and adults about the detriments of sexual abuse and the benefits of seeking consent from the intended sexual partner before any sexual activity.
