KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTION OF ADOLESCENTS ON UNPROTECTED SEX AMONG PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OWO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

There is a global increase on adolescent sexual and reproductive health burden. This aimed at explored the Knowledge and Perception of Adolescents on Unprotected Sex among Public Secondary School Students in Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State. A cross sectional survey design was adopted for the study and a convenience sampling technique was used. A self-structured questionnaire with Cronbach Alpha reliability index of 0.720, 0.811 and 0.850 were used as research instrument. Four research assistants were recruited from the selected schools to help in data collection. The research questions were answered using discrete statistics of mean, standard deviation and percentages while the hypotheses were tested with inferential statistics of t-test and chi square. A multi-stage sampling was used to select four schools with sample size 397. The result of the findings revealed that 46.1% (181) had good knowledge, 26.2% (103) had fair knowledge while 27.7% (109) had poor knowledge. Majorit of the respondents had a positive perception towards unprotected sex(69.4%) while (30.5%) had negative perception. The results also showed that adolescent students in Owo local government area were mostly influenced to engage in unprotected sex for pleasure (3.09), followed by influence of what they read/watch on social media, (a mean of 3.04), watchingpornography,(3.04),attending nightclub(3.02),substanceuse(2.91). Hypotheses tested showed no significance difference in the level of knowledge of unprotected sex between male and female adolescents (p=0.739>0.05). Also there is no significance difference in the perception of unprotected sex among male and female adolescent (p=0.314>0.05). However, there was a significance association between school (p=0.000<0.05) and parents highest level of education (p=0.027<0.05), hence the null hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, sexeducationisatoolforempowering adolescents to abstain from sex and also empower sexually active adolescents to negotiate and practice safer sex. However, sex education may not yield good results unless adolescents have a positive perception towards it. Positive awareness on sex education should be promoted at home, school and on the massmedia.
