ABSTRACT
This study was primarily focused on the knowledge and compliance of University of Benin students to Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV/AID in year 2021. Three research questions were raised to guide the researcher. The design of the study is descriptive survey while the population comprises of 8364 students residing in the University of Benin school hostels. The sample size for this study was 146 respondents. That is simple random sampling technique; the study utilized a validated questionnaire that was designed by the researcher.
From the data collected in the study, the University of Benin students had a good level of knowledge about voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS, they also know the benefits of knowing their status.
Based on the findings, the possible contributing factors known to influence uptake of voluntary counseling and testing which are socio-demographic characteristics, nearness to health facility, HIV-related awareness, and knowledge, perception of being at risk of HIV infection and psychosocio factors such as HIV/AIDs related stigma and discriminations and anxiety about confidentiality, fear that the result might be positive.
Based on the findings, it was recommended that voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) on HIV/AIDs campaign and education should be carried on out least twice yearly in the University of Benin. The University of Benin health centre should collaborate with professionally trained counselors to work in hand in VCT campaigns and education. Counseling modalities should be more directed to attitudes and utilization of VCT among students.
