ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine the knowledge and awareness of the dangers inherent in the use of performance enhancing drug in weightlifting. Four research questions were formulated in the study. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study and randomly selected male and female weightlifters from Edo State Sports Council were utilized. A structured questionnaire formed the research instrument for this study. The finding of the study among others revealed the dangers inherent in the use of performance enhancing drugs among male and female weightlifters to include; malfunction of male sex organ, enlargement of breast in men, deepened voice in women, irregular menstrual period in women and hostile, aggressive and violent behavior in men and women. Weightlifters are aware of the dangers inherent in the use of performance enhancing drugs, there are differences between knowledge and doping in weightlifting, there is no relationship between awareness and dangers inherent in doping. Recommendations include banning of offending athlete, random doping test, and source punishment for coaches.
