ABSTRACT
The study investigated the knowledge and awareness of secondary school students about chemistry education as a course in Nigerian universities Benin City, Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. In the study, Data was collected from (100) respondents drawn from 8 schools in Egor Local Government Area OF Edo State. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using simple percentage and independent t-sample The findings from the study reveal that secondary school students are aware of the course chemistry education at the university level and are aware of the potential career opportunities available to graduates with a degree in chemistry education from universities from universities in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. It was concluded that the effectiveness of chemistry teaching in secondary school enhances student’s interest in the subject and societal view of the importance and relevance of chemistry influences student’s interest in chemistry education.Some of the recommendations made include that School counselors in collaboration with chemistry teachers and university lecturers, should provide targeted career guidance to secondary school students regarding chemistry education as a viable academic path. It was also recommended that Government agencies and educational bodies should ix initiate media campaigns, utilizing television, radio and social media platforms to disseminate information about chemistry education and its relevance in Nigerian universities.
